The heartwarming tale of an irrepressible donkey who needed a home—and forever changed a family.
Rachel Anne Ridge was at the end of her rope. The economy had crashed, taking her formerly thriving business along with it. She had been a successful artist, doing work she loved, but now she felt like a failure. How would her family pay their bills? What would the future hold? If only God would somehow let them know that everything was going to be all right . . . and then Flash the donkey showed up.
If there is ever a good time to discover a wounded, frightened, bedraggled donkey standing in your driveway, this wasn’t it. The local sheriff dismissed Flash as “worthless.” But Rachel didn’t believe that, and she couldn’t turn him away. She brought Flash into her struggling family during their darkest hour—and he turned out to be the very thing they needed most. Flash is the true story of their adventures together in learning to love and trust; breaking down whatever fences stood in their way; and finding the strength, confidence, and faith to carry on. Prepare to fall in love with Flash: a quirky, unlikely hero with gigantic ears, a deafening bray, a personality as big as Texas, and a story you’ll never forget.

Through the generosity of christianaudio I received this audiobook to review for free, but enjoyed the book so much I bought a hard copy to give for a gift.
I really like the way this author writes. I could really relate to her emotions and thoughts, and felt she put it all together very well in this story.
Most importantly, to me, was the fact that there was not one use of bad language. I knew I could give this book as a gift for a teenager I am very close to, without any hesitation or concern.
You may have to be an animal lover to enjoy the book, but regardless, the message is there for anyone if you are willing and open to receive it.
I know so many other reviewers have gone into more detail about this book, but I am just here to say: Its a clean, decent book with a clear clean message. If you are looking for a clean read or a gift for someone, this is a book you can purchase without concern.
Nan McNamara does a great job reading this story. I will have to say however, there is one point in the book where a child is yelling for her mom. When Nan reads "Mom. Mommm. MOM!!" It can grate on your nerve immediately. Otherwise her voice is very clear and easy to listen to.
Thank you Christian Audio for such a great book!
- Rachel Anne Ridge shares practical lessons of faith, love, and reliance on God.
I may have been born and raised in the city, but I’ve always been a country girl at heart. When my husband’s job moved us to Arkansas two years ago, we bought a little plot of land in the country. Out here, removed from the hustle and bustle, is where I have found a wondrous peace. As we have transitioned to a simpler way of life, I have also began to notice God at work in and around me more acutely. I believe that is why Rachel Anne Ridge’s book Flash: The Homeless Donkey Who Taught Me about Life, Faith, and Second Chances resonates so strongly with me.
While the author and I share a love of country living and furry farm friends, something else left me feeling a kindred connection with her. I believe it’s our shared desire to see God in our everyday life. Her heart for God, attentiveness to His voice, and her transparency throughout the book endeared me to the author, her message, and her lovable donkey named Flash.
In a way that is not preachy or presumptuous, Rachel Anne Ridge shares practical lessons of faith, love, and reliance on God. God is in Rachel’s story. If He were absent from the narrative we would still gain a few laughs and a sizable list of donkey care do’s and don’ts from this book, but He’s there. Flash and Rachel’s story reminds readers that God is who He says He is, does what He says He will do, and loves us as deeply as His Word says He does. God is in our stories too… and this book may be what you need to become more attune to his presence and guidance.
Perhaps my favorite aspect of the book is how Rachel reveals her human side. By honestly sharing her thoughts and motives, faith and doubts – during trials and triumphs – she authenticates her message. Additionally, I was encouraged by the fact that this wisdom was coming from a wife and mother like myself, not a pastor or bible scholar. Whether by reading the bible, circumstances in her life, or most notably – a rescued stray donkey, Rachel stands ready to hear from God. This is especially apparent when He chooses to speak to her through the aforementioned donkey!
The audiobook audience will enjoy the seamless delivery of Nan McNamara. It feels as though the narrator captures both the spirit and the intent of the author in her audio recording. Had it not been stated in the credits, I would have assumed the narrator and the author were one in the same.
I rate this touching and humorous tale of love, trust, and faith 4.5/5 stars.
