Rosaria, by the standards of many, was living a very good life. She had a tenured position at a large university in a field for which she cared deeply. She owned two homes with her partner, in which they provided hospitality to students and activists that were looking to make a difference in the world. In the community, Rosaria was involved in volunteer work. At the university, she was a respected advisor of students and her department's curriculum.

Then, in her late 30's, Rosaria encountered something that turned her world upside down--the idea that Christianity, a religion she had regarded as problematic and sometimes downright damaging, might be right about who God was. That idea seemed to fly in the face of the people and causes that she most loved. What follows is a story of what she describes as a train wreck at the hand of the supernatural. These are her secret thoughts about those events, written as only a reflective English professor could.

A thoughtful and challenging read
I would highly recommend this book. The four stars was only because I like to leave room for the few books that belong in the rarified air of five stars. Butterfield is very thoughtful and has keen insight into some of the things that those who've been in "church world" all their lives need to hear (including myself). I especially was moved by her and her husband's journey as parents through adoption and foster care... so much was revealed here about the heart of God through their experience. You may not agree with some of the secondary issues of church polity she brings up along the way, but anyone should be able to benefit and be challenged by her razor sharp understanding and clear articulation of the Gospel. You won't regret picking up a copy.

Relating to the world that God loves
An incredibly helpful book for Christians who want to discover how the secular world thinks and how we might relate to them in a way that brings glory to God.
