We live in a world full of shiny distractions, faced with an onslaught of viral media constantly competing for our attention and demanding our affections. These ever-present visual 'spectacles' can quickly erode our hearts, making it more difficult than ever to walk through life actively treasuring that which is most important and yet invisible: Jesus Christ. In a journalistic style, Tony Reinke shows us just how distracting these spectacles in our lives have become and calls us to ask critical questions about what we're focusing on. The book offers us practical steps to redirect our gaze away from the addictive eye candy of the world and onto the Ultimate Spectacle-leading to the joy and rest our souls crave.
Customer Reviews
- Excellent analysis at what we let distract us.
-
Even though this was an easy book to absorb it left me with many profound insights as to the world around me. One of my favorite concepts is "beauty that beautifies" or finding beauty that isn't a spectacle but that helps us feel connected to all that is good and beautiful in God's creation. For example, taking in the breathtaking natural vistas or listening to wonderful music as opposed to watching spectacles that make us feel superior or ogling the train wreck.
Overall - Eye opener
-
Tony Reinke does a great job of opening our eyes to the distractions we let negatively impact our worship and service to God.
Overall - quit after track 5
-
Failed to capture my interest after 5 tracks. Even though read by the author, the narration is forced.

This is very timely book!!! In this day and age, there’s so much ever so cleverly trying to grab our attention. I appreciate how the author precisely articulates the seemingly limitless “spectacles” we face in our lives. The author reveals keys we must apply to navigate our way. I want sign off and unplug more often for purpose!!!
Overall - Great topic, could use better narration
-
Subject matter is extremely relevant and well written. As for the author's narration, I hate to say it, but to put it nicely, it was monotonous; I struggled to stay focused.
