I have to admit, I was hesitant to read “How to Have Your Life Not Suck” by Bianca Juarez Olthoff. Judging this book by the cover (or at least the title), I assumed it was just another feel-good-about-yourself, slightly-based-on-Scripture, health-and-wealth-gospel-ish type of message. But I have heard Bianca speak on a few occasions, and because her speaking is powerful and Biblically based, I decided to give this book a chance.
This book wasn’t just her take on a one bible story that she stretched to fit her agenda. It was full of real-life examples of lessons learned from Ruth and Naomi. And what she is teaching isn’t just from the book of Ruth, it is supported by Scripture throughout the Old and New Testament. She also collaborated with clinical psychologist Dr. Deborah Gorton. Her combination of experience, Biblical teaching and insight from Dr. Deb provides a unique perspective.
At first glance, it seemed like the book was trying to cover too many topics so there would be something for everyone, but it really stayed true to the teachings of the book of Ruth. Even those topics that aren’t pertinent to me (I’m married, so don’t need dating advice, for example) were interesting and gave me insight to be able to help friends who talk to me about this topic.
This book does need to be read with a bit of humor. Bianca’s joking comes through her writing, for example, her chapter on how to stalk in an acceptable manner when looking for a man. There were two occasions where she implied swear words, which was unnecessary for the meaning of the story, and would have been better written in another way. Aside from that, this book was a pleasant surprise to me. It was incredibly well written and educational, but still entertaining and easy to read.
If you are looking for a book that isn’t just another self-help book that leaves you feeling good about yourself for a few minutes, but is a book that will actually help you change your thinking, your relationships, and your priorities, then this is it.
