Before you can resolve the issues of our day, you must be able to clarify them.
Terms like same-sex marriage, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gay Christian are part of daily discourse; yet enormous controversy surrounds them. They are the stuff of news headlines and vitriolic social media posts. But they also reflect stirrings of the heart in real people with real questions and concerns.
Rosaria Champagne Butterfield, once a leftist professor in a committed lesbian relationship and now a confessional Christian, but always the thoughtful and compassionate professor, has written a followup to The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert. This book answers many of the questions people pose when she speaks at universities and churches, questions not only about her unlikely conversion to Christ but about personal struggles that the questioners only dare to ask someone else who has traveled a long and painful journey.
Dr. Butterfield not only goes to great lengths to clarify some of today's key controversies, she also traces their history and defines the terms that have become second nature today-even going back to God's original design for marriage and sexuality as found in the Bible. She cuts to the heart of the problems and points the way to the solution, which includes a challenge to the church to be all that God intended it to be, and for each person to find the true freedom that is found in Christ.
- Understanding Gender and Sexual Identity from a Biblical Perspective
I give this book a 5 star rating hands down. If you have members of the LGBT community in your circle of friends or family as I do and have often wondered how to reach them for Christ, please read Rosaria's books. Rosaria has a beautiful testimony of the redemption of Christ working in and through her life. She knows first hand the struggles admist those in the LGBT community as she herself once identified as a lesbian. But not only that she has also felt highly misunderstood by those in the church because of her own past history. My question I pose to all of us is this, don't we all have a past? Haven't we all been tempted by sexual sin in one form or another? We all are in need of a savior. This book not only informs us on how to handle the issue of sexual and gender identity from a biblical perspective but it also allows us to do some self reflection. What remains in me and you that needs repentance? We must put sin to death no matter the form as it breaks our fellowship with a Holy triune God. Also, are we reflecting Christ to a lost and dying world? Do we ourselves know how to defend God's design for marriage and gender identity? If we do not then we unwittingly contribute to the confusion that exists in our culture. Prepare to be challenged by the Holy Spirit as you listen to this book.
- Excellent encouragement and challenge
As an English professor at a secular college with two adoptive children and with neighbors and colleagues and friends of very different worldviews and lifestyles, this book was an incredible help, encouragement, and challenge to me. The author is frank about her personal experiences but constantly ties them back to Scripture.
- Excellent Deep Reflections on Identity Politics and Faith
Rosaria is a terrific author and great thinker. Her passion for faithfulness to Christ and caring for people is exemplary. A very encouraging read, and be prepared for necessary nuances.
