- A great read if you are interested in God's viewpoint on the issues that drive our society.
I thought this book was excellent. It was well balanced, well thought out and full of love. It tackes issues that are so important to our modern society but seldom discussed in church. I have two teens that have struggled with Gods viewpoint on a number of these issues. I hope that they will listen to the book too. I believe it will give them a strong foundation to biblical truth so that they may have robust conversations with their peers and teachers about how Gods ways are good for us, and not meant to harm us. I particularly liked Chip's focus on people's predispositions that made them think the way they do. This helped to take away any judgement towards an individual, and enabled the reader to show empathy and love towards those of a different viewpoint without condemnation. We are all sinners saved by Grace.
In Culture Shock: A Biblical Response to Today’s Most Divisive Issues, author, pastor, and radio personality Chip Ingram delves into some of the touchiest subjects imaginable: sex, homosexuality, abortion, politics, right and wrong, and the environment. For each topic, he explains the biblical perspective (not the “Christian” perspective, but the biblical one), the perspectives opposing the biblical perspective, and loving, researched responses to the opposing perspective. In each case, his explanation of the opposing viewpoints carefully cover the emotional as well as the rational factors behind those viewpoints. He is also clear about what is wrong about the common responses that (generally) well-meaning Christians take.
Throughout the book, I found enlightenment, encouragement, and reinforcement, and I feel that it has helped me to better understand all sides of these issues. You might think after reading the previous paragraph that this is just more conservative Christian propaganda written by some Bible thumper. If so, you are wrong. Ingram’s views on the environment, for example, are counter to those espoused by many in conservative Christian circles. The chapter on politics is similarly non-partisan. And, before you jump to conclusions regarding the other topics, you really must read the book.
Ingram encourages Christians to not just give the “Christian” response to these issues, but to “develop convictions based on research, reason, and biblical truth–and be able (and willing) to communicate these convictions with a love and respect that reflects God’s own heart” (quoted from the book’s summary on christianaudio). “Respect” – I like that.
I listened to the audiobook edition of this book and the narration by George W. Sarris was fantastic. Very easy to listen to and it definitely added to the experience of the book.

- Loving those that we disagree with
This book about some of the most controversial social issues of our time is the best fair, balanced and loving analysis of the culture in which we currently find ourselves that I have ever read. It is so hard to speak about these issues without sounding judgmental (which authority only belongs to God). I heard of an incident a few years ago where a gay protester went into a conference dealing with ministries that help gays come out of this lifestyle. The protester went into the meeting specifically to disrupt but found such love that he accepted Christ. If we could all live and act in such a manner as Chip recommends in this book, we might be able to change the perception of those offended.
Chip outlines in very clear terms, the premises that must follow in order to justify the lifestyles which are in question. Chip give both the Biblical basis of Christians and the logic presented by those in these lifestyles. He then demonstrates by examples and research that the premises of the alternate lifestyle arguments are not supported by scientific literature and that the Christian views are valid according to Biblical references.
This book is a must read for those who want love those that we disagree with.
I was given a free audio version of this book for my agreement to review it but this has not influenced my personal impressions of the book.
- Biblical Discussion On The Big Issues
Culture Shock by Chip Ingram is a book with the lofty goal of tackling five of the biggest areas in today's society in the light of what the Bible says on the issues of human sexuality, homosexuality, abortion, the environment and politics. As an introduction he also rebuffs the idea of relative true and the idea that the world likes to promote that nothing is absolutely true.
Each of these ideas is covered in a very complete manner by stating clearly and concisely the arguments from both schools of thought and then applying the scriptures to the issues to shed some light on the issues. He also covers how Christians should response to objections about their stance and how to convey love in their reinforcement of Biblical values.
I thought this was a really great book as he stated everything so clearly and made his arguments in a manner that anyone could follow and apply to their own lives. I think there were a few things that I disagreed with but overall it was a fabulous study of how Christians should approach these hot topics in a largely intolerant world towards the things of God.
The narrator was very good as he was clear and I had no trouble at all following along. Also he presented the content with confidence and it really felt like he believed what he was reading.
This book is great for anyone wondering about what the Bible says about the big issues of today or wanting to reach people with opposing views in a loving manner.

- Politics and Religion, Oh my!
Politics and Religion, those are the two things we are never supposed to talk about. In this audiobook, Chip Ingram does that very thing. He takes us though subjects that most Christians have never heard a single sermon on. He delves into a list that tent to start angry debates.
The following is a partial list of subjects covered:
These are controversies that could be taken from the front page of today’s newspaper. They touch each of our lives in one way or another. If they do not directly affect us, they usually do through our friends and loved ones.
Ingram's writing is easy to read (or in my case, listen to) and the information is every informative. He not only shows the beliefs held on both sides of the issue, he gives a biblical understanding on each subject. The last part of the book is written in a question and answer format. Here is where the book really shines. He takes the hard cases and shows how to give not only a biblical answer, but he does it with a pastor's heart. The book is clear and precise, yet loving and sensitive.
I enjoyed the narration tremendously. I felt like I was listening to a lecture more than an audiobook. The audio was clear and professional.
If you feel that the world is changing way too fast and you need to get a handle on these subjects, please consider this book.
To wrap it up - Read or listen to this book!

- Culture Shock by Chip Ingram Audiobook Review
Culture Shock: A Biblical Response to Today's Most Divisive Issues by Chip Ingram discusses a how Christians can biblically handle hot topics such as sex, homosexuality, abortion, politics, and the environment in a loving, but biblical way.
There are many times when someone will comment about Christians being “Bible thumpers” or unconnected with the culture. There are times when I have seen Christians who mean well turn someone away because of their lack of understanding on the culture or a particular topic. This is one reason I enjoy books like Culture Shock, because they can help me understand the culture and provide insight into addressing hot topics in a God honoring way.
I found Culture Shock to be very beneficial with this. Did I necessarily agree with everything, no, but I found a wealth of information in this book that will help me handle situations differently. I think Chip provided a number of good suggestions to engage the culture and to present a biblical response to some of the hottest topics today.
I have not taken a lot of time to think about how Christians are to handle politics and the role the church plays in this. I also haven’t taken the time to think as much about Christians' roles in the environment. I enjoyed learning Chip’s view on this as it helped me think about some topics I had not taken the time to consider much before. As I said, there were some things in this book I did not agree with, but overall, I found it to challenge me to think about my views.
I enjoyed the narration of this title. If you have read many of my other audiobook reviews, you will know I don’t usually like books that are not read by the author. This title surprised me as I enjoyed the narration.
Overall, I found this audiobook beneficial. I enjoyed the narration and the information I learned from the book.
