Early in the sixteenth century, legislative decree in England controlled people’s access to the Scriptures and prohibited an English Bible. But theologian and linguist, William Tyndale, was determined to provide his fellow countrymen with Scripture they could read.
In The Daring Mission of William Tyndale, the latest addition to the Long Line of Godly Men series, Dr. Steven J. Lawson traces this daring mission, which was ultimately used by God to ignite the English Reformation and would cost Tyndale his life. From one man’s labor, we’re reminded of God’s faithfulness to preserve His Word and equip His people.
- Deeply moving account of one man's sacrifice to give us a Bible in English
This is an excellent series by Dr. Lawson, and Simon Vance does a fine job of narrating as usual. This subject is a particular standout in Dr. Lawson's series, and Dr. Lawson's passion and admiration for his subject shine through his fine narrating of the life of William Tyndale. Once you hear this story, you will never be able to take your English translation of the Bible for granted ever again. I can hardly describe how deeply moved I was to learn of William Tyndale as well as embarrassed and ashamed that I had no idea that this man sacrificed his life so that we might be able to read God's Word. Of all the saints recognized by the Catholic Church, this one martyred by the Catholic Church is quietly unrecognized, while his persecutor, Thomas More, is mythologized. It took this story to convict me of the evil of the Catholic Church and the extent to which it went to withhold the Word of God from the common man. Highly recommended, and this book will just whet your appetite--I highly recommend David Daniell's full-blown biography of William Tyndale once you've dipped into this introduction, and you will never read your Bible the same way again.
- Dr Lawson's books are always very enjoyable.
Great audio of the book, I like to listen to the audio as I read the book
