- Good book, but not what I expected.
The book was good, and the reading was good, but it was not really what I expected. This is a historical novel, set in the last week of Jesus' life on earth. Each chapter opens with a description of one aspect of life in first century Palestine, comparing it also with life in other parts of the world at that time. I was hoping for a book of the type of information given in the introduction passages to the chapters, without the historical novel bit, and without the information about China and other areas of the time period.
However, even the historical novel part did a good job of illustrating the various groups of people and their thinking, and of the rituals and ceremonies practiced by first century Jews in Jerusalem. There are parts that seem to be introducing people to basic Judeo Christian beliefs. I can understand that, but a few times it did feel a bit like Sunday school class.
The book was well read. I think a clearer description of the book on the website might be helpful.
